Wall Street Journal: Campaign Has "Boldest Efforts to Honor the Emperor"
The Wall Street Journal is up today with a front-page article (titled "In San Francisco, Subjects Still Long for Ersatz Emperor of Yore," in the print edition) that looks at the coalescence, in recent years, of something approaching a Bay Area "movement" to celebrate Emperor Norton.
Last December, we called this "the Emperor Norton moment."
The Journal features The Emperor's Bridge Campaign* in its profile, and writes that the Campaign brings together "the boldest efforts to honor the emperor."
This recognition is gratifying. But what truly is gratifying is to see the Campaign mentioned alongside so many of our friends and members of the local Emperor Norton community that we've met, worked with and supported over the last couple of years, including:
Our Board member, Joseph Amster, of the historical walking tour Emperor Norton's Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine
Emperor Norton's Boozeland, who hosted our 2013 launch party and a 2014 fundraiser
Burning Man and Cacophony Society co-founder John Law
Jesse Chandler and Kat Shreve, of the documentary-in-progress Norton the First
Carter Raff of Raff Distillerie, Treasure Island-based maker of the small-batch Emperor Norton Absinthe Dieu and Bummer & Lazarus Gin
Heirs of Norton, instigators of Imperial Landmark plaques on sites of significance to the life of Emperor Norton
Peter Moylan, author of this excellent piece on the Emperor
Emperor Norton of Paris, maker of wonderful foods that we've yet to taste!
Below is the Journal article, as it appeared in print. (Click pages for larger, legible sizes.)
Many thanks to reporters Alejandro Lazo, in San Francisco, and Daniel Huang, in New York, for taking note!
* In December 2019, The Emperor's Bridge Campaign adopted a new name: The Emperor Norton Trust.
