Happy Hour with the Emperor's Niece
Yes, his actual niece!
The Emperor's Bridge Campaign* is honored to have been in touch with 15 of Emperor Norton's family members. Most of them live in South Africa — where John and Sarah Norton arrived from England in May 1820 with their sons Louis, Joshua (the future Emperor) and Philip. There also are "representatives" of the Emperor's family in Namibia, Australia, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago.
Among these, a particular friend and correspondent of the Campaign has been Norton genealogist Julie Driver, who lives in Ontario, Canada.
Julie is Emperor Norton's great, great, great, GREAT niece. (Read on for the details!)
Now and again, Julie makes her way to San Francisco, the seat of her uncle's Empire. Her next visit is late this month — and we are delighted to invite you to join us for a Happy Hour gathering with Julie Driver as our special guest of honor...

The genealogical breakdown...
Julie is the great great great granddaughter of Philip Norton — who was Joshua's (Emperor Norton's) younger brother (making Julie the Emperor's 4x-great niece). When Joshua's parents set sail from England to South Africa in 1820, the family included Joshua and his older brother, Louis. Philip was born en voyage.
Philip married Anne Mary Ogilvie, and they had a son: John Ogilvie Norton.
John Ogilvie Norton married Mary Elizabeth Monkhouse Bowker, and they had a daughter: Mary Mitford "Minnie" Norton.
Minnie is Julie's great grandmother.
Minnie Norton married William Impey Stanford Driver, in the process becoming "Minnie Driver" — no relation, apparently! — and helping to introduce the Driver family name that Julie shares.
And on it goes...

As it happens, the extended Norton family includes a number of genealogists who have taken a serious interest in developing the Norton family tree, and in adding to the body of knowledge about the early life of Joshua — the child, the boy and the man who would become Emperor Norton.
Julie Driver is one of these — and the Campaign has learned much from her.
Please join us in welcoming Julie to the Comstock!
* In December 2019, The Emperor's Bridge Campaign adopted a new name: The Emperor Norton Trust.
